Overview:
The Dialogic Brooktrout Fax Service Provider Software (Brooktrout FSP), when used with Microsoft Fax Service (MFS) and Dialogic Brooktrout Fax Products, can provide an easy and inexpensive implementation of a reliable and secure fax resource for small offices/home offices (SOHO) or small-to-medium businesses (SMB). Microsoft Fax Service is included with Windows Server family of operating systems.
The combination of Microsoft Fax Service, Brooktrout FSP, and Brooktrout Fax Products allows employees to confidentially and securely send faxes directly from their desktops, and receive faxes directly into their email inboxes, eliminating the cost, complications, and lost time associated with walk-up, standalone fax machines.
Faxes can be sent or received using either TDM or Fax over IP (FoIP) technology. When implemented with Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 and Dialogic FoIP technology, inbound faxes can be routed directly to a user's email account by DID using an Active Directory lookup.
Implementations without Exchange Server 2010
Users on enterprise networks that have implemented Microsoft Fax Service and Brooktrout FSP without Exchange Server 2010 are still able to fax from their desktops using a shared fax resource. Fax delivery is either over a TDM network using a Dialogic Brooktrout Fax Board or over an IP network using the Dialogic Brooktrout SR140 Fax Software.
For inbound faxing, faxes are received, converted, and sent to a common Inbox as an email attachment. When using digital Brooktrout Fax Boards or any SR140 license version, forwarding rules may be applied to send the emails to specific recipients based on DID information.
Implementations with Exchange Server 2010
When Exchange Server 2010 is implemented, Brooktrout FSP can be used to significantly extend the routing capabilities of Microsoft Fax Service in an IP environment. The inbound fax routing method in Brooktrout Fax Products utilizes the ability of Exchange Server 2010 to maintain a map of inbound fax numbers and mailboxes. Before a call is routed to FSP, Exchange Server can perform an Active Directory Lookup and include the recipient’s Exchange Server mailbox address with the call. FSP can then receive the fax and send it directly to a user’s Inbox via Brooktrout SR140 rather than holding all inbound faxes in a single mailbox for later distribution.
Dialogic Brooktrout Fax Products and Microsoft Fax Service
Both Dialogic Brooktrout TR1034 Fax Boards and Dialogic Brooktrout TruFax Fax Boards support TDM faxing with Brooktrout FSP and Microsoft Fax Service. These boards offer:
- Analog, DID, BRI, T1/PRI, and E1/PRI interfaces
- 1 to 24 channels per board when used with Microsoft Fax Service
Note: Multiple Brooktrout Fax Boards can be used in each system; however, Brooktrout TruFax cannot be used with Brooktrout TR1034 in the same chassis.
The SR140-LL-FSP license version of Brooktrout SR140 enables FoIP faxing with Brooktrout FSP and Microsoft Fax Service, and offers a low-cost but feature-restricted solution. The SR140-LL-FSP license version provides:
- T.38 V17
- DTMF detection and generation
- 2, 4, or 8 channels per system
SR140-LL-FSP license versions have limited functionality, can only be used with Microsoft Fax Service, and cannot be expanded to add additional features. Solutions using SR140-LL-FSP are suitable for businesses that do not require fax as an integrated part of a document flow system and do not require fax audit capabilities.
Brooktrout FSP may also be implemented with an SR140 license version.
For those wanting more functionality than that offered by the Microsoft Fax Service, solutions from Dialogic ISV partners using SR140 license versions offer higher density, higher speeds, IVR support, and advanced fax features, such as high resolution and color faxing. Use the search capabilities of the Dialogic Fax Partner Directory on the Dialogic website to learn more about these solutions.
